The name 'The Frame Breakers' stems from the infamous Luddite movement that swept through the framework knitting industry in the early 1800s, when new industrial knitting looms began replacing hand knitting frames. This threatened the livelihoods of traditional framework knitters - and they decided to rebel.
Named after the mythical leader Ned Ludd, the Luddites raided the new factories, breaking up the knitting frames and disrupting manufacturing. The movement began in Nottinghamshire in 1811 and quickly spread across Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.
Despite 5 years of protest , the Luddites' efforts were in vain. By the mid nineteenth century, the textile trade had become fully industrialised and hand-production all but abandoned.
